Young Dragons Testing Requirements

General Minimum Requirements

An all white uniform.
A minimum of one month training time between tests.
Must have a mature attitude about the art.
Consistent attendance.
Paid dues.
Each testing should demonstrate a students sincere, best efforts.

9th Gup

Name of Style: Tang Soo Do.
Form: Giecho Hyung Il Bu (One).
Front Kick, Side Kick, Round Kick, Reverse Kick.
1-Steps Set One, part one:
  • Side Step, Middle punch RH
  • Side Step, Side kick RF
  • Side Step, Front kick LF
Self defense:
  • Hair grab
  • Grab hand, front kick to shin, groin or knee
  • Lapel grab
  • Triceps pinch
  • Throat push-off - jugular notch
  • Double elbow strike, heel palm, knee strike
Sparring: Basic combinations - hand & feet, no contact.

8th Gup

Name of Grand Master (Hwang Kee).
Names of instructors.
Forms: Giecho Hyung IL Bu-A (One-A), Giecho Hyung Yi Bu (Two).
Jump front kick (with hurdle and jumping off both feet).
1-Steps Set One, part two:
  • Double Soo Do
  • Double punch RH, LH
  • Round kick RF
Self defense:
  • Wrist grabs: single, straight & cross (not 2 on 1)
  • Pivot break away for both. Scoop to arm bar for cross grab
  • Double wrist grab (opponent grabs both your wrists)
  • Pivot, elbow to elbow, wrist grab, control step behind & counter
  • Sparring (basic combinations: three techniques, back and forth).

    7th Gup

    Form: Giecho Hyung Sahm Bu (Three).
    Skip side kick.
    1-Steps Set One, part three:
    • Out to in block, backfist to head RH
    • Out to in block, elbow strike to ribs RE
    • Step back, reverse kick LF
    Self defense:
    • Head lock
      • Reach around and pull down
      • Groin strike, hair or face grab
    • Double wrist grab (opponent grabs one wrist with two hands)
      • Scoop up to arm bar on cross arm
      • Reach in pull out breakaway - Soo Do or kick
    Free fighting: controlled offensive and defensive techniques.

    6th Gup

    Must be able to count to ten (10) in Korean and call Korean commands at the beginning and ending of class.
    Written test questions:
    • Why is karate important to you?
    • What are your goals in karate?
    Form: Pyung Ahn Cho Dan (One).
    Kicks: Hook Kick, Jump Side Kick
    1-Steps Set Two, kicks with follow-up hand strikes
    Self defense:
    • Bear hug, over and under arms, front and rear.
    • Groin grab
    • Pinching thigh
    • Biting, screaming in ear, head butt
    • Elbow strikes
    • Pressure points of head (below nose and below ear)
    • Kicks to instep and shin
    Free fighting: controlled offensive and defensive techniques.

    5th Gup

    Must know all karate terms in Korean.
    Form: Pyung Ahn Yi Dan (Two).
    3-Steps Set One.
    All basic actions.
    Free fighting: controlled offensive and defensive techniques.
    Self defense:
    • Front and rear choke hold with hands
    • Windmill break, follow up knee strike
    • Jugular notch push away
    Break through 3/4" of wood 12"x12".

    4th Gup

    Form: Pyung Ahn Sahm Dan (Three).
    Crescent kicks: Out-to-In, and In-to-Out.
    3-Steps Set Two (Set Two counters on last motion).
    Combination basic actions.
    Self defense:
    • Rear arm bar choke:
      • Pivot toward elbow
      • Heel palm, knee strike to thigh
    • Rear arm bar choke with other hand held:
      • Release hand, elbow strike then same as above
    Free fighting: controlled offensive and defensive techniques.

    3rd Gup

    Form: Pyung Ahn Sah Dan (Four).
    Spinning hook kick.
    1 Steps: Advanced kicking and take-downs (students choice).
    Self defense against club and knife:
    • Overhead strike defense
    • Side slash defense
    • Back slash defense
    • Straight lunge to middle body defense
    Free Sparring.
    Breaking 3/4" board 12"x12" with hands and feet.

    2nd Gup

    Form: Pyung Ahn Oe Dan (Five).
    Must assist in teaching.
    Spin crescent kicks.
    1-Steps: student's choice using your own resources and capabilities, incorporating combinations using 3 & 4 motions minimum.
    Self defense: freestyle against multiple attackers.
    Weapons form (any of bow, sai, jo, bokken, nunchakus or tonfa).
    Free sparring.

    1st Gup

    Must know and improve all requirements from previous tests.
    Form: Bassai.
    Jump Kicks: Round and Reverse.
    Ax kick.
    Speed kicking drill.
    Free Sparring (2 on 1).

    1st Dan

    Form: Nai Ahn Chi Cho Dan (One).
    Written assignment (discuss with Sensei Mirandette).
    Know the manual for oral test.
    Inside Twisting Kick.
    Fighting from the floor.
    Breaking: 2" and two-way 1" combination (talk to Sensei Mirandette).
    All techniques from all previous tests and in-class requirements.
    All 1-Steps and 3-Steps from both sides.
    Proper attitude.
